Where to Move to Escape Climate Change (and How to Work Remotely There)

| Article by Eleanor Wyatt

One of the pluses of remote work is that you can move anywhere and still earn an income. Whether you are just starting to work from home or plan to become an entrepreneur, here are ways to live your best remote-working, environmentally-conscious life, courtesy of Nestron.

Decide Where to Move to Escape Climate Change

When contemplating climate change, deciding where to move is an important choice. While no one can predict exactly how climate change will impact a single city anywhere in the world, Policy Genius’s research suggests some areas will be less affected than others.

For example, San Francisco, California, and Seattle, Washington, are less likely to suffer the effects of climate change, whereas all areas of Florida are danger zones. There is no place with zero risk, but avoiding flood risk, wildfire danger, and drastic heat fluctuations are helpful steps.

Relocating doesn’t allow you to escape climate change entirely, but a smart move may delay the inevitable—and protect your property.

Choose A Greener Home

Finding a place to live is another challenge with climate change in mind. A standard rental or home purchase may not be the most environmentally-friendly move. However, you have options, no matter where you plan to live.

For example, the earth-friendly home Nestron is a house that uses 90 percent recyclable materials and is almost emission-free. Living in a Nestron house could be green, cost-effective, and comfortable. All you need is to rent or buy land.

Other eco-conscious home options include tiny houses, zero-carbon homes, and even DIY or low-cost straw bale or shipping container homes.

Work on Small-Scale Planet Saving

Choosing a greener home is one way to do your part in helping the planet. Consider taking other eco-friendly actions at home to do your part in mitigating climate change. At the local level, minimizing energy use and waste output are great ways to help the planet.

Consuming less energy around the house is one way to go green, explains the Natural Resources Defense Council. Completely powering down electronics and appliances, using LED light bulbs, and dialing back your thermostat can all help reduce energy use (and costs).

Reduce your trash output by recycling, composting, and purchasing low-waste items. Checking plastics and packaging for recycling symbols ensures plastics and paper don’t wind up in landfills. Learning to compost nourishes your garden and makes your trash output lower. And finally, buying items with less packaging means less recycling and less trash.

Start Your Own Business

Starting a business isn’t necessarily a way to save the planet, but it gives you control over how you work. For a strong start, begin by writing a comprehensive business plan. Your business plan describes your company, outlines product or service details, defines a company structure, and includes financial and funding info.

Before creating a business plan, consider your professional strengths and whether it makes sense to sell a product or service. Working for yourself also means location independence is a possibility, so a service option may be preferable to stocking products.

Set Out On a Remote-Friendly Career Path

Launching a remote-friendly career could be key to your climate change relocation plans. Working for clients or a company that promotes remote work means you can travel or relocate anytime.

One must-do step in starting a remote career is sprucing up your resume. Adding your latest skills, achievements, and experience is easy, even with a PDF document. There’s a tool to help with this that allows you to edit PDFs and easily save and share.

When using your new resume to apply for jobs, be sure to read the fine print regarding remote work policies. Some employers may have limitations on where workers can live while working remotely for tax and employment law purposes. Be sure to follow the rules when agreeing to perform a job.

Whether you decide to relocate with a new business or plan to find a remote career, moving to a climate-stable place is a smart long-term strategy. By working remotely and doing your part to be eco-conscious, you’ll be helping the planet while protecting yourself and your property.
